As the ship gracefully sails into Ketchikan, the vibrant cultural scenes and totem poles underscore the rich heritage of the indigenous peoples. Finally, the return journey to Vancouver marks the completion of a maritime voyage that seamlessly blends adventure, nature, and luxury.

Transitioning from sea to land, the adventure continues with a coach tour of the Canadian Rockies. Jasper, nestled within the expansive Jasper National Park, welcomes with its untamed wilderness and iconic mountain views. Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska (Cruising Day)

A popular tour destination on cruise itineraries, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve wows with its icy wilderness and grand glaciers in southeastern Alaska. Cruise ships, sailboats, kayaks and more navigate the 65-mile bay for picturesque vantage points of more than 1,000 glaciers, but they can't draw too near to the frozen giants since chunks of ice often break off, or calve, from glaciers and thunder down into the water, creating icebergs. Glaciers of note include the park's largest tidewater glacier, John Hopkins; the elongated 21-mile Margerie; and the rapidly receding Muir. The park also is home to an amazing world of marine life, including humpback whales, sea otters, giant Pacific octopuses and harbor porpoises. An array of species resides on land, from brown and black bears to moose, mountain goats, wolves and prickly porcupines, while the bird variety includes bald eagles, tufted puffins and trumpeter swans.

While the town itself may lack the charm of Sitka or Petersburg, the surrounding scenery is stunning. Travelers arriving by boat will see Lynn Canal, the longest and deepest fjord in North America, close in on them. Once you are in town, mountains seem to surround you on all sides. Looming over Fort Seward are the jagged Cathedral Peaks of the Chilkat Mountains.

Day 8

Tracy Arm, Twin Sawyer Glaciers, Alaska (Cruising Day)

This 30-mile fjord, formed centuries ago by glacial activity, is flanked by colossal granite cliffs, with snow-capped mountains looming beyond. Boat cruises, Zodiac expeditions and kayaking adventures lead you past cascading waterfalls and a diversity of wildlife, from goats and whales to brown bears and bald eagles. Come springtime, you can spot harbor seals tending to their newborns. At the end of the waterway are the main attractions-the twin Sawyer Glaciers, which calve every hour or so, sending slabs of clear blue ice plummeting into the water below. Witnessing these purges is a memorable experience, one that allows you to see, hear and feel the full force of nature.
