6 Day Finland Tour | Thrills in the Arctic Wilderness

From its colorful houses to its vibrant nightlife, Reykjavik has something for everyone. However, one of the most fascinating things about Iceland is its volcanoes, and no visit to Reykjavik would be complete without exploring them. In addition, you may also catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights while exploring the volcanoes.

Visitors will take guided tours of the volcanos, where they can learn about their history and geology while marveling at its beauty. These tours typically involve hiking, and visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including glaciers and mountains.

In addition to the volcanoes, you will also take various Northern Lights tours, where you can witness one of the world's most stunning natural wonders. The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, occur when charged particles from the sun collide with atoms in the Earth's atmosphere, creating a colorful light show in the sky.

A Northern Lights tour typically involves driving outside of Reykjavik to a remote location with minimal light pollution. Once there, you can witness the Northern Lights in all their glory, while enjoying hot cocoa and snacks. The tour guides are often experts in astronomy and can provide fascinating insights into the science behind the Northern Lights.

Overall, visiting Reykjavik and exploring its volcanoes while catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that shouldn't be missed. The city's unique culture, combined with its stunning natural wonders, makes it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an unforgettable travel experience.

Day 2

Day 3

Reykjavik

Your tour begins with a refreshing light breakfast and orientation meeting at Harpa Concert Hall. Your discovery of this modern city begins with a drive past the Old Town Centre, Parliament, the cathedral and the bustling harbor area. See Hofdi House, site of the 1986 Iceland Summit where Reagan and Gorbachev met to end the Cold War.

This evening you will enjoy the Northern Lights small group tour. The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, are caused by collisions between particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. In Iceland they are visible during the winter months, from late August to April, and appear in many different forms and colours although light green and pink are the most common. Why join a guided tour to see the northern lights in Iceland?  Our northern lights team studies thoroughly the weather and aurora forecast in order to find the best location each night to spot the lights. While the lights can often be seen from the city, they are never as clear or magnificent when polluted by the city lights. Getting a warm ride to the best possible site for sightings is well worth it. The northern lights are an unforgettable sight to witness and should be enjoyed in the best possible conditions. This is a classic northern lights tour but in a smaller group. That means you get more time with your expert guide for assistance on photography and facts.

Day 4

 Reykjavik - Geysir - Þingvellir - Reykjavik

Explore a few of Iceland‘s most famous landmarks on Golden Circle Direct as well as go on a search for the northern lights in one day. Begin the day at 12:30 with a Golden Circle tour, where you will visit Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall and Þingvellir National Park.

Geysir is the place from which all other geysers in the world get their name. The famous Geysir does not often erupt anymore but the smaller, but very impressive, Strokkur erupts every 4-8 minutes and shoots a column of water up to 40 metres up in the air.

Gullfoss waterfall is a part of the glacial river Hvítá which gets its water from Langjökull glacier, the second largest glacier in Iceland. The step-waterfall is quite the sight, and from many viewpoints it looks like the waterfall falls straight into an abyss, but in reality, it falls into a crevice which is 32 metres deep.

The last stop of the day is at Þingvellir which is known for being one of the very few places in the world where you can see the North-American and Eurasian tectonic plates above ground (other places are all in Iceland). The park is a UNESCO world heritage site.

You will arrive back in Reykjavík around 18:30. You will have a few hours to spend before you join our Northern Lights tour.

The three-hour long Northern Lights tour will take you out of the city for the best possible view of the lights. The northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole.

The locations visited during the Northern Lights tour vary from day to day depending on weather conditions. Because this tour is weather dependent, sightings are not guaranteed. However, if you do not see any northern lights during this tour, you are welcome to join the tour again, free of charge. Indicated return times may vary if the activity is good.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 5

Reykjavík - Raufarhólshellir - Reykjavík

On this adventure, we visit the lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir located only 30 minutes from Reykjavík. We will witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while we walk in the path of a lava that flowed thousands of years ago. The lava tunnel is one of the biggest in Iceland and gets up to 30 metres wide and 10 metres high. The lava tube ceiling has caved in near the entrance, which creates beautiful columns of light. The fantastic range of colours of the tunnel wall is caused by the different mineral types of the rock. This is a tour for the senses. Experience a new world, hear the talk of the cave and sense the forces of nature like you have never done before. Learn new things and step out of your comfort zone. Scenes from the Hollywood movie Noah, with Anthony Hopkins, were shot in this lava cave.  You walk around 350 metres into the lava tunnel and the temperature in the cave is around 4 degrees although it can be warmer outside and usually water leaks from the ceiling when it rains and snows so we recommend raincoats.

Day 6

Reykjavík - Vík - Reynisdrangar - Sólheimajökull - Reykjavík

This South Shore Adventure tour is ideal for nature lovers of all kinds. We take you along the south coast of Iceland, one of the country’s most scenic regions, as far as Vík, a charming village surrounded by high beautiful bird cliffs.  South Iceland is special in that it is one of the flattest regions on the island. As a result, nearly all grain farming in Iceland is done there. The high mountains to the north, shield the area from the harshest northern winds.

Among the stops on this tour are the gorgeous Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss is part of the Seljalandsá river, which has its origins in Eyjafjallajökull glacier. What makes Seljalandsfoss so famous and interesting is that you can walk behind it. We suggest you bring either a raincoat or a waterproof coat along if you want to stroll behind it which we of course highly recommend.

Skógafoss, another famous Icelandic waterfall, is the starting point of the Fimmvörðuháls walk over to Þórsmörk. This most picturesque of all waterfalls is something of a film star, having been used as a backdrop in films such as Thor: The Dark World and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

We will also stop at Reynisfjara black sand beach, with the Reynisdrangar rock formations and columnar basalt. It is one of the most spectacular beaches in Iceland but can be quite dangerous due to powerful sneaker waves, and we kindly ask our guests not to go too close to the ocean and follow all guidelines.  Additionally, we stop by Sólheimajökull glacier and walk up to a small lake that has formed in front of the retreating glacier.

Day 7

Reykjavík

Enjoy a day at leisure.  This evening you will enjoy the Northern Lights by Boat Tour. Seeing the Northern Lights at sea is an amazing experience; sailing away from the coastline of Reykjavík and seeing the auroras on the North-Atlantic with the city lights in the background is something you won't forget!  Our expert guide will help you to search for the lights while telling you all about the science, legends and myths that surround this amazing natural phenomenon. There is a speaker system on board so you are welcome to wait inside our cafeteria enjoying a warm drink or watching our own Northern Lights video. When the guide sees the lights, they will announce it on the speaker system so everyone knows to head outside and look up!  Our friendly crew takes photos on every tour that are available to download in the following days at no extra charge. They are also happy to assist with camera settings to give you the best chance of capturing the auroras.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 8
Reykjavík - Geldingadalur - Fagradalsfjall - Reykjavík
Today you will witness a live-action volcanic eruption!

In 2021, the Reykjanes Peninsula erupted for the first time in 800 years. Now the ground has opened up again and a new eruption has begun. This provides a unique opportunity to study and experience the geologic mysteries of the area and is open for all to enjoy!

This is your chance to go on a guided tour of the volcanic eruption. The driver and guide will take the group to the start of the hiking trail towards the active volcano. The hike takes approximately 2-3 hours each way but the sites around the volcano are always changing due to freely flowing lava and the hiking time can change.

Don´t miss out on this once in a lifetime experience and witness the raw power of lava pouring out of the surface of the earth.

The volcanic landscape can be uneven and challenging. Therefore, sturdy hiking boots and warm outdoor clothing is mandatory. There is no running water on the way to fill a water bottle so please bring plenty of water and a hardy lunch.

If you are not a hiker, Upgrade to a helicopter ride over the Volcano from $600 per person.

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Standard room based on twin share

Day 9
Reykjavík

Enjoy a day at leisure.

In the evening, embark on a trip to see the Aurora Borealis. Hear fascinating facts about them from your guides, visit the Aurora Museum, and search to see the lights first-hand.
Depart the bright lights of Reykjavík city centre to see the dancing lights of the Aurora Borealis. Also known as the “Northern Lights,” it is one of the most spectacular shows during winter months. Head for wherever meteorologists have predicted the lights will be at their best. To get stunning views of the sky you will aim for areas with no artificial light. Hear explanations of how the Aurora Borealis is caused as a result of the gaseous particles in the earth’s atmosphere colliding with charged particles released from the sun’s atmosphere.

Benefit from an itinerary that includes stops for you to go outside and take photographs. The locations visited differ from day to day, but you will head in the direction with the most chance of seeing Mother Nature at work. As the tour is weather-dependent, and sightings are not guaranteed, you are also invited to join another Northern Lights tour free of charge if the lights don’t appear.

Explore the Northern Lights in the Aurora Museum. The Northern Lights tour includes a complimentary ticket for a self-guided visit to the museum in Reykjavik, valid on the day you join the tour, from the time you receive confirmation that the tour is on.
